Antoine Griezmann admits regrets over possible transfer to Manchester United

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has admitted he has regrets over his possible transfer to Manchester United and how things unfolded.

The Frenchman was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho aimed to claim his world-class signing last summer.

Griezmann even publicly stated that it was highly likely he would move to United, sending fans into a frantic frenzy as they bid the club to make the move happen.

Mourinho also revealed his wishes to sign a winger and other stars such as Gareth Bale and Ivan Perisic were targeted too.

However, nothing came to fruition for various reasons and the 26 year old was no longer a target, especially after Alexis Sanchez was signed in the January transfer window.

According to the Faithful MUFC, Manchester Evening News reported that Antoine said: “I want to make the most of this great football moment and help the fans enjoy themselves. I’m happy about this cheering and I admit that I might have made some mistakes.

“I said some things that I shouldn’t have [about a possible transfer to Manchester United] and I regret to have asked the fans to shut up a few weeks ago regarding something I did they didn’t like.”

The versatile attacker seemingly decided against a move to the Red Devils after Madrid’s transfer ban was upheld last summer.

The decision meant that Atletico could no longer replace Antoine Griezmann and so he showed loyalty to his club by staying put.

Perhaps he had hoped that Manchester United would come calling once more in January or even the upcoming summer but instead Sanchez was signed.

Jose may have weighed up the advantages and disadvantages of both deals before deciding to go for the Arsenal winger.

Alexis represented an equally good talent and was available for a straight swap that involved getting rid of a player who underperformed in the shape of Henrik Mkhitaryan.

United would’ve likely had to fight Barcelona for Griezmann as well as shelling out at least €100m to sign him.
