Jesse Lingard backs Marcus Rashford after man of the match performance vs Liverpool

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard has backed his teammate Marcus Rashford to continue improving after the player’s man of the match performance vs Liverpool.

The striker turned winger grabbed his club two crucial goals in twenty minutes in their 2-1 win over their fierce rivals.

The Reds failed to recover after that with their one goal coming through an own goal from Eric Bailly’s silly clearance.

The Ivorian was immense in his performance otherwise but it was Rashford who rightfully grabbed the headlines for his contribution.

Fellow academy product Lingard vocally supported the youngster and asked him to be patient as United continue to develop him.

It was Marcus who started the game rather than Jesse and his quick fire brace is sure to put pressure on his colleague.

While the 25 year old isn’t a direct rival to the young star in terms of positions, there’s plenty of competition in Jose Mourinho’s versatile attackers.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are both capable of playing on the left-wing and striker positions while Alexis Sanchez can play anywhere across the front four.

Jesse Lingard can play anywhere behind the striker as well as occasionally fill in at central midfield when needed.

Juan Mata meanwhile has already proven his versatility on the right wing as well as his preferred attacking midfield position.

The players versatility allows them to alternate and swap positions during matches, helping them confuse opposition defences that may try to man mark.

Mourinho’s never hidden his love for versatile players and it’s no surprise it’s one of the reasons he’s publicly stated his happiness with his attack.
