Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Paul Pogba suffered an injury during the last minute of Manchester United’s training session on Friday ahead of his side’s 2-1 win over Liverpool.
The French midfielder, who played a crucial role in wins over Chelsea and Crystal Palace, reportedly suffered a gash to his leg in training.
He was not immediately ruled out but medical staff declared on Saturday morning that he was not fit to play, although Man United thankfully did not miss him as Marcus Rashford‘s brace handed the hosts three points.
And Mourinho, speaking after the 2-1 win over Jurgen Klopp’s side, noted that the 24-year-old had picked up an unfortunate injury.
“He was injured in the last minute of the last training session before the game,” he said.
“Incredible. If I finished the training session one minute before he would have been OK. It’s an unlucky situation and he’s out.”
When asked about how long Pogba would be out for, Mourinho replied: “I don’t know, I really don’t know.”
No player has been more unlucky with big games under the 55-year-old than Pogba, who has missed trips to Anfield and Stamford Bridge alongside the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City this term.
The nature of this recent set-back almost makes it seem as if the footballing gods are working against him, but supporters will be hopeful that his spell on the sidelines is short. A gash to the leg hardly spells an end to his season, after all, but does require precautions as well.
United’s midfield duo of Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay hardly put a foot wrong on Saturday but you sense Mourinho will need to call upon Pogba against Sevilla as his side goes searching for goals.
