Paul Merson backs Liverpool to finish ahead of Manchester United in the Premier League

Paul Merson believes Liverpool will eventually jump ahead of Manchester United into second place in the Premier League this season.

Man United claimed a vital 2-1 win over the third placed side last weekend to give them a five point cushion over Jurgen Klopp’s side.

But places in the top four still hang firmly in the balance, with just nine points separating second spot from fifth.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Watford this weekend, Merson backed Liverpool to pull ahead of their rivals in the table.

“I fancy Liverpool to beat Manchester United into second, and this game is important for them to close down the current five-point gap,” he said.

“There’s a lot to play for second place, mark my words. United have to play Manchester City so the gap will be two points, so Liverpool have to ensure they win these games.”

United’s lead over Liverpool will be cut to two points when they are inevitably mauled by Manchester City. That much is true.

Nevertheless, United can still feel a measure of confidence. Mourinho has, for all his shortcomings this season, somehow managed to keep his side comfortably ahead of the rest, and with Liverpool still fighting in the Champions League they may well drop more points as their options become strained through April.

They have a trip to Goodison Park sandwiched in between a quarter-final tie with Manchester City – along with a visit to Stamford Bridge for their penultimate game of the campaign.

United’s biggest worry after their trip to the Ethiad, on the other hand, will be the visit of Arsenal.

Following a tumultuous Champions League exit, finishing second – best of the rest, so to speak – has to be a bare minimum requirement for Mourinho.
