Jesse Lingard: Manchester United stars showed character following Sevilla loss

Manchester United star Jesse Lingard insists the club’s stars showed character following the Sevilla loss by beating Brighton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Jose Mourinho’s men limped to a 2-0 win at Old Trafford to reach the prestigious competitions semi-finals as they bid to secure the only remaining possibly trophy.

With the Premier League firmly in Manchester City’s grasp and United knocked out of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup, the FA Cup represents United’s only form of glory.

A second placed finish and the FA Cup trophy is surely the club’s current target and would represent a respectable season given how things have developed as the campaign wore on.

Lingard did admit that the players suffered following the loss to Sevilla but showed character by bouncing back to defeat Brighton.

According to the club’s official website, Jesse said: “They [Brighton] sat back and hit us on the counter-attack a few times, which we were obviously aware of before the match, but we knew we needed to win tonight and we got the win, which was the most important thing.

“Of course [confidence took a knock after Tuesday night]. It’s always difficult for a team to be knocked out of a competition, but we showed the character tonight to bounce back and not let anything faze us.”

The Englishman’s words are a far cry from his manager’s condemning words following the win as Jose Mourinho complained of some of his players attitudes.

The win was certainly nothing vintage and United’s clinical nature on the day was what gave them the flattering scoreline rather than their top performance.

In fact, it was pretty much just two players’ efforts that saw the club win with Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic both in fine form.

The Serbian in particular put in a man of the match display, assisting his Belgian teammate and scoring a goal himself to secure the win.

Everyone else pretty much cruised by in the match with no one truly putting in a noteworthy display, including Jesse Lingard.
