Jamie Redknapp: Jose Mourinho needs to win the FA Cup more than Mauricio Pochettino or Antonio Conte

Jamie Redknapp believes that Jose Mourinho is under more pressure than Mauricio Pochettino or Antonio Conte to win the FA Cup this season.

Manchester United’s defeat to Sevilla last week has significantly changed the complexion of their season, with second place and the FA Cup now the best they can hope for in Mourinho’s second season.

They will face Tottenham Hotspur, who dominated them at Wembley in January, in the semi-final after beating Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford last weekend.

And Redknapp, writing in his column for the Daily Mail, insisted that Mourinho will be under the most pressure to bring silverware to Old Trafford in May.

“Three big managers — Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino — now find the FA Cup is their only source of silverware,” he said.

“Of the three, the Manchester United manager will be under the most pressure to deliver.

“Since United’s Champions League exit, Mourinho has come under fire for his negative style of play. Attractive football is not what you get with a Jose team. Instead, he delivers trophies.

“Win the FA Cup — his third major honour in two years — and he would silence his critics. Fail to do so and the scrutiny will increase.”

There is absolutely no pressure on Conte to win the FA Cup this season because, well, he will leave in the summer regardless of the outcome.

Pochettino, on the other hand, is under hardly any pressure at all either because he has never won a trophy. While expectations on Mourinho are rightly huge, there is literally no bar that can be set for the Spurs boss. No frame of reference. Trophies are simply not in his – or the club’s – DNA, and with that comes no pressure.

Whether this proves to be a blessing or a curse for Spurs in the semi-final remains to be seen. But the Argentine will know that the man in the opposite dugout understands how to navigate these affairs in a way that he could only dream of.
