Danny Higginbotham: Manchester United are progressing under Jose Mourinho

Danny Higginbotham has insisted that Manchester United are still progressing under Jose Mourinho as more pressure is piled on the manager’s shoulders.

The Portuguese coach has seen his ability called into question in recent years due to his last season at Chelsea with many claiming he’s simple outdated.

Despite being a relatively young manager, some sections of the media insist that his methods, the same ones that brought him so much success previously, have simply gone out of style.

With other top European club’s playing a more extravagant style of football, Mourinho’s counter-attacking football has seen neutrals lose interest as well as United fans complain.

Higginbotham though insists that the club has gotten better and points to their attacking and defending records as proof.

According to Talk Sport, Danny said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “Manchester United are progressing. They are only about four points short of last season’s total with eight games left, they’ve scored more goals and conceded less goals, so in those terms they are progressing under Mourinho.

“I think he’s right man for the job, I really do. The club is progressing – out of the top six there are only three other clubs that are actually in a better position than last season.

“Man United are building their way back up now and, as long as they are improving each season, which they are this year, then you’ve got to say there is progression there under Mourinho.”

Although the Red Devils haven’t been playing incredible, high tempo, attacking football of late, it seem bizarre to claim Jose is incapable of producing quality football.

As others have pointed out, it was his Real Madrid side that broke the La Liga record for goals scored, along with the multiple other records they broke under his tenure.

Of course the quality of players he had then are different to what he has now at Old Trafford but the point is he’s certainly capable of doing so.

Some may claim he did so at other clubs but has failed to do so at Manchester United but that is also false and the club’s excellent early season form was testament to that.
