Ian Wright has backed Jesse Lingard following his match winning performance for England vs Holland in last night’s friendly fixture.
The Three Lions were expected to be in a tough game with the Dutch but it proved to be far from it as they dominated for large parts of the match.
While the scoreline doesn’t reflect it the English were a gear or two above their opponents as they began their World Cup warm-up in style.
With there still being places in the England squad to be won over, Lingard put in a memorable shift and grabbed his first senior international goal.
Wright was working as a pundit with ITV who broadcasted the match and hailed the Manchester United player’s performance.
According to the Express, Ian said: “I’m pleased for Jesse, with everything that’s been happening to him. He was having a good season up to a point and then Sanchez came in and since then he’s worked hard, he gets his chance and he’s taken advantage.
“I’m very pleased for Jesse. You would have thought that, with the inclusion of Sanchez to the United side, he would have been deflated by that but he’s actually got better and we’re seeing that now.”
Most fans of the senior England team have backed Tottenham’s Dele Alli to be the nation’s main attacking midfielder but Gareth Southgate decided to give Jesse an opportunity to prove his worth and he didn’t disappoint.
United fans are well aware of their player’s ability as he continues to go from strength to strength on all footballing stages.
The versatile attacker has worked tremendously hard to go from being a useful rotational option to a potential regular starter for both club and country.
With his goalscoring record in double digits this season it’s fair to say that Jesse Lingard has done far better than most anticipated him to do before the campaign began.
Should he continue performing then there’s no doubt he will be on the plane to Russia for the World Cup, especially given how Southgate is a fan.
