Craig Burley has claimed that Jose Mourinho could leave Manchester United if they sell David de Gea in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Spaniard has long been a target for Real Madrid and while he hasn’t publicly claimed his desire to leave, there’s always been the looming feeling that he could depart Old Trafford.
De Gea is perhaps United’s only world class player and at the very least their best asset and so seeing him leave could tip Mourinho over the edge.
While the board haven’t got a history of going over the manager’s head, it has previously happened to the Portuguese manager at different clubs.
Should Madrid come in with a hugely tempting offer, the Red Devils hierarchy could take matters into their own hands and Burley has warned them of the potential consequences.
According to the Sport Review, Craig said to ESPN FC: “I think De Gea will stay. If Man United sell him, Mourinho could walk. He is their best player. They can’t afford to allow him to go to Real Madrid. They don’t need the money.”
David has had another outstanding season for Manchester United as he heads into the prime of his career and considering how the club are in transition, fans are surprised they’ve held onto him for this long.
Many supporters have credited Jose with helping keep the talented goalkeeper at the club, at least for the time being and if he could tie him to a new contract, it would almost be like a new signing.
The Portuguese manager has previously stated his desire to hold onto his star players, claiming that United are not a selling club.
Jose Mourinho has made it clear that if his club wish to be the best then they must refrain from selling their best players.
