Manchester United favourite Andy Cole has urged his former club to close the gap on fierce rivals Manchester City next season.
Pep Guardiola’s men have been the outstanding team in the Premier League this campaign, racing ahead of everyone else for the title.
United currently sit in second place but are still sixteen points away from the Sky Blues with Jose Mourinho’s progress appearing minuscule against their efforts.
The Portuguese manager has been adamant that had it not been for City’s extraordinary season then it might’ve been his team winning the title instead.
Cole though is focussed on the future and has urged the Red Devils to do all they can to make amends when the next Premier League season begins.
According to the club’s official website, Andy said: “You can see the development in us. But we have to brutally honest and say the other part of the city has been absolutely fantastic, with the football they’ve played, and the fact they’ve only lost one league game this season says it all.
“It is a gap that needs to be closed and hopefully next season we will do. If we do finish second then we can look at it as a positive, even though finishing second is not what everybody wants to see at Manchester United. But it is a positive compared to last season.”
At the start of the season Champions League football was the expectation but with how the campaign has progressed, a second placed finish is now seen as a bit of a disappointment.
The Citizens success makes it worse for Manchester United as well but it could end on a positive note should Mourinho’s men win the FA Cup to sweeten the blow of missing out on the title.
However, there’s certainly huge pressure on the former Real Madrid manager to deliver the title next season due to what’s happened as well as it being his third season in charge.
The United job has definitely proven to be the biggest one that Jose has taken on and it’s clear he’s doing all he can but he will have to be careful for it to not end poorly.
