Craig Burley has perhaps correctly stated that Manchester United fans must’ve wanted Jose Mourinho gone at half-time during the match against Manchester City.
The players found themselves trailing 2-0 at the Etihad with supporters believing a rout from the home side was about to come.
However, United surprisingly fought back and fought back hard, securing a remarkable comeback win that saw the match end 3-2 in Mourinho’s favour.
The win denied City a title victory which just added more spice to the fans’ celebrations with the Portuguese manager now being lauded.
At half time though there were certainly some supporters who believed the match was proof that Jose should be gone as Burley suggests.
According to the Express, Craig said on ESPN: “Manchester United were absolutely abysmal in the first 45 minutes. United fans must have been looking and thinking ‘we’ve got to get rid of this guy Jose Mourinho because we are going nowhere’.
“But in the second half, things changed. City self-destructed, maybe with one eye on that Champions League game, but we know defensively they’ve got problems.”
Jose Mourinho did set up his players in the right manner as the first 25 minutes showed but was once more let down in a big match.
The fact that the Portuguese manager has beaten all top six opposition at least once this season proves he knows how to get results in big matches.
However, just as the match against the Sky Blues showed, silly errors is what often costs the Red Devils with the defenders in particular often being the guilty party.
It’s also perhaps why Mourinho hasn’t been able to trust his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation against the top six due to the defence needing extra protection.
A switch to a 4-3-3 shape is often what’s been done but at least it does end up getting the results that were needed.
