Manchester United identify Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand as potential Luke Shaw replacement – report

Manchester United are considering a £25m bid for Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand as Jose Mourinho searches for a Luke Shaw replacement in the summer, according to reports.

The full-back has not featured for Man United since being hooked off at half time and ruthlessly criticised by Mourinho in the aftermath of an FA Cup semi-final win over Brighton and Hove Albion last month.

He looks set to leave the club in the summer and United have lined up a series of targets, with Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam and Juventus’ Alex Sandro both reportedly on the club’s radar.

And according to the Sun, Mourinho would be prepared to sanction a bid worth £25m for the Southampton regular in the summer.

Bertrand has always been a player I’ve quietly liked: well-drilled, largely inconspicuous but effective at his job, capable of playing on a week-in-week-out basis, blessed with plenty of experience – he started for Chelsea in the 2012 Champions League final – and comfortable on the big stage.

He offers a sense of continuity at left in the Premier League that United have been deprived of since 2013. At the age of 28 he does not serve as a long term solution but would, at least, guarantee a measure of consistency in the meantime.
