Jose Mourinho: Manchester United are not going to break the bank in the summer

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that he will not break the bank or do anything crazy in the summer transfer window.

With reports of the Portuguese boss being keen on signing PSG’s Neymar and following the shock loss against West Brom many expected a squad overhaul in the upcoming window.

Mourinho’s been linked with several players all across the pitch in terms of positions but he’s previously stated he has no desire to improve his attack.

The former Real Madrid manager was adamant he’s happy with his attackers and will instead focus on his midfield and defence.

Following the loss to the Baggies though many believed it would mean he would completely overhaul his squad though he’s denied that.

According to the Sport Review, Jose said to Sky Sports: “We are not going to spend more than we can. We are not going to do anything crazy. We are just trying to improve a little bit more. That’s what we are going to try.

“Everybody will try to improve – like we did from last season. Last season we finished sixth and this season we are going to finish, hopefully, second.”

The need for improvement has particularly shown itself in Manchester United’s defence more so than their midfield despite what reports claim.

Jose Mourinho is only adding depth to the engine room due to Michael Carrick‘s imminent retirement and due to the uncertain futures of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

The defence though includes the likes of Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young who all featured against West Brom and failed to keep a clean sheet.

The former Fulham man has already been criticised enough this season while United’s reliance on two ageing former wingers who’ve been turned into full-backs is pretty shocking.

Valencia and Young don’t offer anything to the team when moving forward any longer for various reasons and improvement in the full-back areas has to be a priority for Mourinho.
