Luke Shaw: Everyone is fighting for a position at Manchester United

Manchester United star Luke Shaw insists that everyone in the squad is fighting for a position in the starting XI, particularly for match against Tottenham.

Jose Mourinho’s men travel to Wembley to take on the London side in the FA Cup semi-final knowing fully well it’s the only trophy they have available to win this season.

United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup and Champions League respectively while they handed the Premier League title to fierce rivals Manchester City.

Mourinho and his players can still redeem themselves and conclude a decent season by finishing in second place as well as grabbing the FA Cup trophy.

Shaw put his foot in the door by performing admirably against Bournemouth and hopes it’s enough to see him start against Spurs.

According to the Daily Star, Luke said: “Today was all about the three points. I don’t think it mattered about how we performed. Of course we want to perform and have a good performance but the three points was the main objective.

“You could tell the mood over the last couple of days has sort of been a bit down because obviously it was a real bad result on the weekend.

“Everyone’s suffered from it and we wanted to put things right today. Of course it’s not going to be forgotten but as a team and for momentum going into the weekend (against Tottenham) we wanted to make sure we got the points today.

“I think we put in a good performance, we defended well. We attacked well when we had chances – two goals and a clean sheet is great for us.

“I think when the manager makes changes like this, people are fighting for positions and it’s an opportunity for people to come in and showcase what they can do.

“Everyone wants to be playing on the weekend and it’s down to the manager for that and that’s why I think the team was so good tonight because they know the big game is on the weekend and everyone wants to play in it and everyone wants to be in that starting XI, including me.”

Luke Shaw is likely to lose his place once more to Ashley Young though there’s certainly a case being made for him to start the FA Cup final.

The former Southampton defender showed just what he offers against Bournemouth as he was solid at the back but also made attacking runs forward.

Young is a decent full-back but because he’s right footed, whenever he gets forward he has to cut inside to cross which kills momentum for anyone waiting in the box.
