Ander Herrera: David de Gea is better than Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel

by Marwan Harraz

Ander Herrera has insisted David de Gea is a better goalkeeper for Manchester United than Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel.

Many fans struggle picking between all three players with it appearing to be a generational favouritism according to who witnessed which player during their peak.

What’s clear is that all three are great goalkeepers within their own rights and it perhaps helps supporters that all three had different traits.

De Gea is perhaps the best in terms of pure shot-stopping though even he’s likely to admit the other two were better in terms of leading from the back and commanding their area.

Either way, Herrera is convinced his fellow Spaniard has to be judged as the best out of the remarkable trio in a rather unsurprising fashion.

According to the club’s official website, Ander said: “I cannot say anything other than David [is better than Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel]. For me, David is the best.

“He is the best I have trained with and sometimes, in training, it is funny because when he doesn’t want us to score, we don’t! So, for me, there is no doubt.

“But, of course, I respect the other two because they both had amazing careers and did amazingly for the club. I don’t know if they were as good as David at the same age.

“Maybe you can tell me. They were amazing, but maybe when they were a bit older.”

David de Gea can certainly become a club legend in his own right as Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel are though he arguably has to win more trophies in order to go down in history.

The Spaniard has unfortunately joined Manchester United when they aren’t in their peak era in the same way the other two perhaps experienced.

Jose Mourinho is certainly attempting to fix that and should De Gea continue to perform consistently as he has done so far and add a few more Premier League trophies to his name, there’s definitely room for him to be a club icon.
