David May has claimed Manchester United players would be keen to impress Jose Mourinho as they all bid to feature in the FA Cup final.
With fierce rivals Manchester City recently being crowned as Premier League champions, there’s an argument to be made that the squad doesn’t have much to play for.
Their second placed finish is on the line but an incentive isn’t really there given they’ve almost guaranteed Champions League football next season.
May though believes now with the FA Cup final on the line, many players will be fired up and won’t just go through the motions in United’s remaining fixtures.
Mourinho has also made it clear that he will decide his starting XI depending on who performs before then so the former player does have a point.
According to the club’s official website, David said: “Had we not won at the weekend against Spurs it would have been a poor end to the season. It would have been flat and it would have been dead.
“But now everybody in the team is thinking, ‘hang on a minute we have got a Wembley cup final here’. So they will be pulling their fingers out to put in performances over the next four games, to impress the manager and get a place in that squad for the biggest game of the season.”
Manchester United’s players should always want to win regardless of the circumstances going on around them though the incentive to appear in the FA Cup final is an understandable one.
Supporters will be hoping it will help the club secure second place in the Premier League comfortably and hopefully the FA Cup trophy itself.
Should both objectives be reached then it wouldn’t be a completely disastrous campaign as many sections of the media like to suggest.
