Michael Owen: Michael Carrick was offered the famous #7 Manchester United shirt

Former Manchester United man Michael Owen has revealed Michael Carrick almost wore the famous number seven shirt for the club after Cristiano Ronaldo left.

The Portuguese international departed Old Trafford for a then world record fee to Real Madrid and not only did he leave a hole in the squad but also vacated the prestigious number.

The number seven shirt has been idolised by United fans as it’s been worn by some of their most iconic players in their history.

It’s often a heavy shirt to wear and one that top players typically put on with Carrick apparently coming pretty close to wearing it instead.

Owen was the one who wore the shirt following Ronaldo’s departure and he’s now revealed just how close the midfielder came to taking it.

According to the Express, Michael said to JOE: “Sir Alex called myself and Michael Carrick into his office. He says, ‘The No.7, Michael, I want you to wear it. I think you can handle the pressure and all that comes with it.’

“He then nods at Carrick and says, ‘If you don’t want it, Michael you can have it.’ He looks at me and says, ‘Do you want it?’ ‘Absolutely,’ I replied.”

Michael Carrick is unfortunately set to retire from Manchester United this season though he will continue to be a part of the club as a coach.

The veteran has had an illustrious career since moving to Old Trafford and he certainly would’ve been deserving of the number seven shirt had he decided to wear it at that time.

Michael Owen wasn’t the biggest of stars to have represented that shirt but he did have a moment or two that wrote him down in the club’s history.
