Anthony Martial pays tribute to Arsene Wenger following stoppage time winner against Arsenal

Anthony Martial has paid tribute to fellow countryman Arsene Wenger following his final game at Old Trafford as Arsenal manager.

The Frenchman was given a vase by Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho ahead of the game to commemorate his achievements at the club, thanking the club in the aftermath for what was a “classy” gesture.

His team, littered with youngsters and fringe players, laboured hard but ultimately fell victim to the pace of Martial from the bench and an injury time Marouane Fellaini header.

Martial took to social media after the game to pay his respects to a true Premier League icon, whose final game at Old Trafford fittingly ended in ignominy.

Wenger will be disappointed to lose at Old Trafford on his final visit there. But perhaps, in time, he will recognise the way its closing stages mirrored how his games at this stadium have always been: full of drama.

And while Fellaini grabbed the headlines, it was Martial who set the platform for a lively finish, producing darting runs straight into the heart of Arsenal’s back four from the moment he came on. In a sea of mush, he was a hot knife, and on another day he could have claimed two assists.

It was a performance which demonstrated that Martial, while far from guaranteed to stay in the summer, remains intent on giving everything under Jose Mourinho.
