Anthony Martial’s relationship with Jose Mourinho reaches breaking point – report

Anthony Martial and Jose Mourinho’s relationship has reached breaking point following the manager’s criticism of his performance against Brighton and Hove Albion, according to reports.

The Frenchman, who has been heavily linked with a move away, received a start against Brighton but failed to have any impact on the left hand side.

Mourinho noted after the game that the performance highlighted why certain players didn’t start for the club more often, clearly alluding to the Frenchman.

And according to the Independent‘s Ed Maylon, Martial’s relationship with Mourinho has grown even more strained following the manager’s comments after the game.

Martial is an exceptional talent. Everybody knows that. But to Mourinho that means nothing unless it comes with a type of work rate, a kind of drive, that he so admires in the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

As a result, he doesn’t start games. And when he does his confidence is so low, his legs lacking the necessary ‘match rhythm’ (as a certain Dutchman would put it), that he always ends up looking below par, consigned to the periphery even when on the pitch.

It is a sad state of affairs, and one which will probably see him find another club in the summer.
