Gary Neville: Brighton defeat signals last straw for some Manchester United players under Jose Mourinho

by Leo Nieboer

Gary Neville believes that Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion will serve as the last straw for some players under Jose Mourinho.

A second string side produced one of the worst performances of the season against Chris Hughton side, displaying nothing in the form of attacking nous or efficiency in possession.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted that Man United’s performance explained why some fringe players weren’t starting more matches under his watch.

And Neville, reacting to that interview, claimed that this game – that horrid, horrid performance – would signal the final straw for some players ahead of the summer.

Mourinho had mainly withdrawn from hitting out at his players – unless their name was Luke Shaw – until the Sevilla defeat. He did it again following FA Cup victory over Brighton. More was to come following West Bromwich Albion.

And now, following yet another disinterested display from his players, his tone was more final. We have seen how ruthlessly resilient and prolific United’s best starting XI can be this season. When Mourinho deviates from it, the decision making, momentum, collective will to take control of games from his players goes out of the window.

Make no mistake: there are going to be some considerable changes in the summer. Mourinho is fed up.
