Manchester United planning £25m swoop for Napoli forward Dries Mertens – report

Manchester United are planning a £25m swoop for Napoli striker Dries Mertens in the summer, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho is prepared to dispense with Anthony Martial this summer and admires the Belgian, who has 21 goals this season.

Napoli’s former sporting director recently confirmed that Man United had expressed interest in Mertens and could capitalise on his remarkably low £25m release clause, which only applies to clubs outside Italy.

And according to the Sun, United are indeed planning a £25m swoop for the Belgian striker over the summer as Mourinho looks to find a replacement for Martial.

The Portuguese has stated that he no longer wants to invest in attacking options following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez on a number of occasions, but that may change if Martial, as is looking increasingly likely, does decide to jump ship in the summer.

In that sense, Mertens feels like a player who would suit the current Mourinho mould, producing the quick, pinpoint interplay that the manager values so much in Jesse Lingard and Sanchez.

That chemistry with fellow countryman Lukaku is already at an advanced level. And his capacity to play as a second striker, occasionally floating out wide, could very well present even more chances for the 24-year-old next season.
