Yaya Toure insists Paul Pogba will become “the perfect midfielder” at Manchester United

Yaya Toure has insisted that Paul Pogba will become “the perfect midfielder” at Manchester United over the next few years.

The Frenchman attracted criticism for a series of underwhelming performances since the turn of the year which led to him being dropped by Jose Mourinho.

His resurgence throughout April, however, has been excellent, with the 25-year-old producing decisive displays in big games against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

And Toure, speaking in an interview with the Guardian, was keen to stress that Pogba would go on to prove his doubters wrong.

“I always loved to prove people wrong,” he said. “I was put under a lot of pressure, as Paul Pogba, who has similar characteristics to me, is now.”

“I believe Pogba will become the perfect player. And if they are honest, the people who said things about me will say they were wrong.”

The English press reacted with similar vehemence to Toure’s early performances for City, labelling the Ivorian as someone with an attitude problem, lacking the necessary thrust in the middle seemingly required to succeed in the Premier League. Too slow, too flashy, not playing for the team. These were all things levelled at Toure.

So what did he do? The midfielder kept his head down, worked tirelessly every day, and won trophies, silencing his critics in the process.

It is without doubt a case from which Pogba can take immense inspiration going forward at United. One day, the talk will stop altogether.
