Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Sergio Romero will take David de Gea‘s place in goal for Manchester United’s final Premier League game of the season against Watford on Sunday, adding that Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial receive another chance to impress.
Mourinho consigned both Rashford and Martial to the bench against West Ham after expressing his anger publicly at their performances during Man United’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton last weekend.
Romero, meanwhile, returned to the Man United squad on Thursday for the first time since injuring his knee whilst on international duty in March.
And the boss, following a clean sheet for De Gea which guaranteed he would receive the ‘Golden Glove’ award, noted that Romero, ahead of the World Cup, would get a chance to play against the Hornets on a pressure-free final day of the campaign.
“It is normal that Michael Carrick is captain at Old Trafford for the last game of his career,” he said. “David de Gea will be rested, it gives a chance for Sergio Romero to play, I can make changes.”
He added later that Rashford and Martial would come in for Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard on Sunday, providing the pair with a chance to agitate for a spot in the starting XI against Chelsea at Wembley on May 19.
