David de Gea: This is my best season at Manchester United

David de Gea has named the 2017-18 season as his best at Manchester United after being awarded an array of personal honours over the past month.

United could end the campaign trophy-less if they are defeated by Chelsea in next weekend’s FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, but have achieved their highest league finish since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

On a personal note, however, De Gea has earned plenty of recognition for another phenomenal year in between the sticks at Old Trafford as his reputation to be the world’s best goalkeeper continues to strengthen.

“I think it’s been a very complete season for me, my best since I’ve been at the club, I reckon,” he told United’s matchday programme ‘United Review’ ahead of the Watford match on Sunday.

De Gea scooped double silverware at the club’s end of season awards as he was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, as voted by fans, for the fourth time in five years and the Players’ Player of the Year.

On top of that, the Spanish stopper was nominated for PFA Player of the Year, won by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, and once again took his place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

De Gea continued: “It’s always good to be able to help out the team, and to try and be at your highest level of form possible to be able to earn points for the team.”

A clean sheet in United’s 0-0 draw at West Ham United on Thursday saw him claim the Premier League Golden Glove for, astonishingly, the first time in England with 18 clean sheets out of 37 league outings.

“And that’s the most important thing, to help the team in every way you can and to maintain that level of consistency which I believe is what makes the difference.”

Jose Mourinho has already confirmed that David de Gea will stay in Manchester this summer amid constant interest from European giants Real Madrid, so expect more heroics throughout 2018-19.
