Manchester United 0-1 Chelsea: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 6 – Sent the wrong way for Eden Hazard’s penalty but, aside from a close quarters save from Marco Alonso, had little else to do.

Antonio Valencia 7 – A driving, ambitious performance from the Ecuadorian. Defended well enough in the first half and bombed forward like his life depended on it.

Phil Jones 5 – The Englishman didn’t settle into the game during the first half and it cost Manchester United dearly. Chopped down Hazard after getting his body position all wrong and never really recovered.

Chris Smalling 7 – Did his job of containing the threat of Olivier Giroud well. Another solid performance from a player in form.

Ashley Young 6 – Displayed initiative from the very start, always looking to work the angles on the left hand side and winning several free kicks. Final product was once again missing though.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Essentially did his job, moving the ball to plays forward in steady fashion and kept Chelsea lately at bay through the centre, although was wasteful further forward.

Ander Herrera 5 – Couldn’t keep Hazard quiet and his fixation on the Belgian throughout the first period meant United looked a man short at times in midfield. Let off the shackles in the second half but ultimately proved ineffective in possession.

Paul Pogba 6 – The Frenchman was essentially anonymous in the first half but his pulsating run through the middle just before half time ignited a change in tempo from the team, which he led ebulliently but ultimately without end product. Wasted a glorious chance in the 82nd minute.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Took up some clever positions in between the lines and showed plenty of intent, but rarely ever found himself in any space. Drifted through the game.

Alexis Sanchez 5 – Brought his usual fight and energy to the game and always looked to probe gaps, only to once again fall short in linking up with his teammates.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Put simply, the youngster looks shot of confidence: sloppy in possession, coming far too deep and narrowing the attack as a result, shabby on set-pieces. United were a blunt instrument with him at the masthead.
