Ander Herrera: Manchester United must match ‘perfect’ City next season

Ander Herrera says that Manchester United need to try and match Manchester City’s ‘perfect’ 10 months next season.

Man City have strolled through the 2017-18 Premier League in Pep Guardiola’s second year in charge, winning the title with three matches to spare and finishing on 100 points – a Premier League record.

United secured second place with 81 points, the highest total since winning the title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 but were 19 behind their city rivals and have been regularly slated for a poor style of football.

Despite the negatives that fans and pundits have been picking out from the second season under José Mourinho, Herrera has been focusing on the positives and is already looking ahead to the next campaign.

Speaking after United’s 1-0 Emirates FA Cup Final defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, Herrera said: “I think we’ve done good [this season]. Normally in a normal Premier League we should have been fighting for the title with the amount of points we had.

“But Man City did perfect, so the only thing we can do is try to do the same next season.”

Even though United’s league campaign has been the best in a while, the club endured shock knock-outs from both the League Cup and UEFA Champions League at the hands of Bristol City and Sevilla.

Herrera continued: “We’ll try to not make some mistakes that we made this season – some games that we should have won against teams that – with all my respect for team – we should win those games.

“As I told you, keep fighting for titles, keep coming to Wembley — hopefully — and that’s all we can do.”

After not being selected in Spain’s 2018 World Cup squad, Herrera will have the summer to relax and get into the right frame of mind to come back after the break and challenge for a place against the new midfielders José Mourinho is expected to bring to the club.
