Danny Murphy: If Romelu Lukaku couldn’t play he shouldn’t have been on the bench

Danny Murphy has slammed Romelu Lukaku for not giving his all in Manchester United’s defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

The Belgian international appeared to report himself unfit for the match with Jose Mourinho hinting it in the pre-match talk.

The Portuguese boss was visibly disappointed in his player and handed the starting XI spot to Marcus Rashford instead who failed to make an impact.

Lukaku is talismanic for Mourinho’s tactics and so it’s understandable why he was so upset since the physiotherapists are said to have not ruled the player out.

Murphy has since blasted the striker, claiming he shouldn’t even have been on the bench if he was truly unfit as deemed to be.

According to Sports Mole, Danny said to talkSPORT: “I’ve never once, in my whole career, said that I can’t play when asked if I could – unless I physically can’t run about.

“I’ve played with all sorts [of injuries]. Some players feel like they have to be 100% to play. If that were the case, I’d never play. United fans must be absolutely fuming if that’s true.

“If he’s got something pretty bad and thinks he’s struggling, you can’t go on the bench. What if Marcus Rashford had come off?

“The manager should’ve said to him ‘you’re starting, if you can’t start then don’t go on the bench’.”

Romelu did come off the bench to try to help his team turn the match on it’s head but unfortunately it was too late.

The former Everton man has his reasons if the reports are true as he perhaps didn’t want to risk aggravating a knock so that he could still travel to the World Cup with Belgium.

Though it’s not nice for fans to hear that their player didn’t wish to give everything he can to the side in the final, it would be unfair as he’s pretty much done that all season long.
