The transfer window is underway and that naturally means social media will be awash with rumours, chit chat, abuse, hope, agony, argument, and most of all misleading nonsense.
One of the first players to be tenuously linked with Manchester United this summer is Benfica attacking midfielder Anderson Talisca, who has enjoyed an encouraging two year loan spell at Besiktas.
Senol Gunes, Besiktas’ manager, confirmed yesterday that Talisca would move to the Premier League, prompting a frenzy among Man United fans on social media even though it was heavily implied that he would be joining Liverpool, who have actual concrete interest in signing him, as well as a reason to get him.
But that was never going to stop particular accounts fanning the flames, such as the one below, which posted a screen shot in a way which suggested Talisca had suddenly followed a series of United players.
But here’s the catch: Instagram shows mutual followers first to users and not in the order they were followed by the account.
It is worth noting that Talisca also follows Napoli players like Dries Mertens and Marek Hamsik. Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Marco Verratti, Paolo Dybala, Ousmane Dembele, Julian Draxler and N’Golo Kante are all on the list of users he follows as well.
In a way, then, this article is a reminder to all of you ahead of the beastly onslaught of convoluted nonsense that is the summer transfer window: to just dig a little deeper, to make sure you have all the facts, before forming opinions or getting too excited about something you saw on the internet.
