Gianluca Di Marzio: Manchester United interested in signing Mario Mandzukic

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United have identified Juventus and Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic as a top transfer target this summer, according to the reliable Gianluca Di Marzio.

Jose Mourinho bemoaned the lack of a physical presence up front in the absence of Romelu Lukaku for the FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea last weekend.

The growingly likely departure of Marouane Fellaini has only intensified Mourinho’s desire to add a physically imposing forward to his squad over the summer.

And according to Di Marzio, the 55-year-old has pinpointed Mandzukic as an ideal reinforcement and sees West Ham United’s Marco Arnautovic as a backup option.

Mourinho has always placed an emphasis on strength and height as a manager. It is why he labelled Romelu Lukaku as his “sergeant on the pitch” earlier this year; it is why he has tried to hard to keep Fellaini – a player most supporters can’t wait to see the back of; it is why he looks upon Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay with such favour; it is why he is interested in Toby Alderweireld.

The 55-year-old will only do things his way at United. And the sight of his side’s attacking setup breaking down without the burgeoning presence of Lukaku has necessitated the pursuit of a similar profile.
