Manchester United refuse to include Anthony Martial in deal for Toby Alderweireld – report

Manchester United will not entertain the prospect of using Anthony Martial as part of a deal to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho has expressed an interest in the Belgian, who will be allowed to leave Spurs after falling out with the club over a new contract, and the two clubs reportedly begun talks earlier this week.

Martial, meanwhile, is a player Mauricio Pochettino likes and could opt for a fresh start after a torrid second half of the 2017/18 campaign.

But according to ESPN‘s Rob Dawson, Man United have no intention to use Martial as bait to sign Alderweireld, who is guaranteed to leave the club, and will only listen to offers for the Frenchman if he pushes for a move.

The consensus within the Old Trafford is clear: United do not want to sell Martial. His talent – and sheer popularity among supporters – cannot be something the club willingly gives up.

But that, sadly, isn’t really the problem. The issue lies strictly with Mourinho and the lack of trust he has in the winger to play him regularly. It is down to Martial to change the 55-year-old’s mind, but there is a general feeling among supporters that this simply won’t be possible.
