Who is Diogo Dalot? Profiling Manchester United’s first summer capture

by Alex Turk

FC Porto right-back Diogo Dalot looks set to become Manchester United’s first signing of the summer after his €20m (£17.5m) release clause was triggered.

The 19-year-old is expected to be the first of a few defensive incomings at Man United during the summer due to Jose Mourinho losing faith in his current options.

Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian all look set to leave the club in the coming months and Mourinho is thought to be keen to bring in a centre-back and left-back as well as Dalot.

Born in Braga, Dalot has represented Portugal at U-15, U-16, U-17, U-19, U-20 and U-21 level and helped win the 2016 UEFA U-17 European Championships, scoring in the final against Spain, in Azerbaijan.

Full name ‘Jose Diogo Dalot Teixeira’, he joined the Porto academy as a nine-year-old in 2008 and broke into the first team during the 2017-18 season under manager Sergio Conceicao.

Seven of Dalot’s 33 appearances throughout the last campaign came as part of the senior set-up, one of which was in a Champions League Round of 16 away trip to Liverpool where he helped hold the eventual finalists to a 0-0 stalemate.

He is a natural right-back but played as a left-back on that night, meaning he would add versatility to Mourinho’s squad. As a right-footed player though, he’d be better suited to stick to the right side of the backline.

It is believed that Mourinho sees Dalot as competition for expected captain Antonio Valencia, but also as the Ecuador international’s future successor, indicating he sees Timothy Fosu-Mensah best placed elsewhere.

The transfer should be confirmed in the coming days, and will mark the start of United’s exciting summer transfer window activity ahead of the 2018-19 season.
