Diogo Dalot could become ‘phenomenon’ at Manchester United

Former FC Porto midfielder Bino has predicted a bright future for young right-back Diogo Dalot, who should be announced as Manchester United’s first signing of the summer later this week.

Reports emerged on Tuesday afternoon that Man United had triggered the €20m (£17.5m) release clause in his Porto contract and personal terms had already been agreed.

The 19-year-old is thought to be wanted by Jose Mourinho as strong competition for expected captain Antonio Valencia before eventually becoming Valencia’s successor at the right of the defence.

Ex-Porto star Bino has stressed the promise Dalot has shown in Portugal already: “Above all, I believe in the potential of the player. Dalot is a sensation and he has been showing it over the last few years.

“Having the opportunity to move abroad even before playing properly in Portuguese football shows the potential he has.”

Dalot has made just eight senior appearances, all coming last season including in the Champions League Round of 16, Second Leg 0-0 stalemate against Liverpool at Anfield.

Bino added: “I believe if he goes to Manchester, the indications are good as Jose Mourinho already has prior knowledge of the player.

“He has all the potential and could succeed – that is what we all believe in and are hopeful about,” the 45-year-old continued.

“He is a young Portuguese footballer who can do well abroad and in the national team because he has all the conditions to become a phenomenon in his position.”

Dalot was born in Braga and has represented Portugal at U-15, U-16, U-17, U-19, U-20 and U-21 level, helping the under-17s win the 2016 UEFA European Championships in Azerbaijan.

He is said to carry immense attacking prowess with exceptional crossing ability and can play at either right or left-back, but strongly favours his right foot.

United have reportedly beaten other European giants including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus to the youngster’s signature and all parties will confirm the transfer in the coming days.
