Romelu Lukaku has insisted that his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho is as good as ever amid reports of a rift over his fitness for the FA Cup Final.
Mourinho was reportedly unhappy with Lukaku for deeming himself not fit to start the showpiece final at Wembley Stadium where Manchester United fell to a 1-0 defeat against Chelsea.
Lukaku did enter the field of play in the 73rd minute but couldn’t make an impact as Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty denied United a record-equalling 13th FA Cup triumph.
After full-time, Mourinho expressed his disappointment that Lukaku wasn’t available from the get-go which sparked speculation over whether the 25-year-old was in his bad books.
However, Lukaku has squashed those rumours whilst on international duty with Belgium ahead of the Russia World Cup: “FA Cup final? We had a conversation after the game, we were both disappointed. I said to him I’m looking forward to next season.
“Everybody now thinks me and the manager have a big issue, we have a perfect relationship. Everything is clear.”
Mourinho brought Lukaku to Old Trafford from Everton for a British-record £75m last summer and he enjoyed his most prolific season in England so far, netting 27 times including 16 in the Premier League.
The Belgian has been United’s main man since arriving and will be looking to develop further throughout the 2018-19 campaign with, if Mourinho gets his way in the transfer market, tougher competition for that label.
