Manchester United determined to hand Anthony Martial contract extension – report

Manchester United are determined to keep Anthony Martial at Old Trafford over the summer and want him to sign a contract extension which would keep him at the club beyond 2019, according to reports.

The Frenchman’s deal expires at the end of the 2018/19 campaign but has the option to add another year onto his contract.

But Martial, having been consigned to the periphery since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, wants guarantees from Jose Mourinho of more playing time before he commits his long term future to Man United.

According to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, the club’s hierarchy, presumably backed by Mourinho, is pushing hard to keep the talented youngster at United.

The situation doesn’t look great for Martial at this moment in time. Sanchez is the manager’s preferred option on the left hand side, with Marcus Rashford also seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order. Combine that with United’s reported interest in Marco Arnautovic and Mario Mandzukic, and you have to wonder where exactly he fits in next year.

But the 22-year-old, before making any sweeping decision, ought to keep in mind how quickly fortunes can change and, more notably, how players can fall out of favour under Mourinho in an instant. For all he knows, the roles could end up reversing with Sanchez if he fails to kick on.

The club wants him to stay; Martial’s first choice would be to stay. He is still young. The arc of history is long. There is every chance the landscape will look very different next year.
