Jose Mourinho has described new Manchester United signing Diogo Dalot as the best teenage full-back in Europe.
Dalot put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the option of a further year on Tuesday after completing his medical at the Aon Training Complex at the start of the week.
The 19-year-old is Mourinho’s second summer capture; £52m Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred also signed a five-year deal with Man United this week to kick-off preparations ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
Speaking to MUTV after a £19m fee was agreed with FC Porto and Dalot was announced as a United player, Mourinho was full of praise for the Portugal under-21 international.
“Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club.
“He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.
“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”
Mourinho clearly expects good things from Dalot, who has only played eight first team matches after breaking into the Porto first team last season.
Dalot is expected to go straight into the first team set-up, but is thought to be seen as an understudy for captain Antonio Valencia, but will eventually succeed the 32-year-old as first-choice right-back.
He’ll still get plenty of game time in his first year at Old Trafford though, as Valencia gets older and regular football becomes more of a struggle – we saw this last season.
The youngster’s arrival has definitely excited fans though, and we’ll get a first glimpse of him in action during the pre-season tour of America.
