Manchester United target and Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld has insisted he’s not focussed on anything other than playing for his country at the World Cup.
The Belgium international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a while now and reports continue to grow about how close he is to completing the transfer.
The latest news was that negotiations with the London club came to a stalemate after both sides failed to reach an understanding over Alderweireld’s value.
Spurs want a figure close to what Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk which is around £75m while United don’t want to part with more than £50m.
Whether there can be a breakthrough in talks or not is yet to be seen but it’s likely that if it were to happen it will happen after the tournament in Russia ends.
According to Football London, Toby said: “I have no problem with that [being distracted by links with Man Utd] because I’m 100 per cent focused on Belgium. It’s a dream come true to play at a World Cup.
“So I’m focused on the World Cup, that’s all. There’s nothing else on my mind.”
The figure the Red Devils are said to have been hoping to part with makes a lot more sense than what Tottenham are asking for, after all the circumstances are far more different than to Van Dijk’s transfer.
Alderweireld is an older player, likely to only have one last big contract in him and Southampton also had more to lose by selling their star player.
