Jose Mourinho has told Ed Woodward he wants a new central defender and left-back by the time Manchester United’s pre-season begins in less than three weeks time, according to reports.
Man United have already completed the signings of right back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred from Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk respectively.
Toby Alderweireld and Alex Sandro have been earmarked as primary targets for the two positions but progress in both deals has stagnated in recent weeks.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Mourinho has instructed Woodward to add two further signings to the club’s roster before they jet off to Los Angeles for their pre-season tour on July 15.
Sandro, who joined Juventus in 2015, was one of the first targets mentioned ahead of the summer, with some reports even stating he would arrive immediately after the FA Cup final. The reality has been far less exciting: the odd report from Italy here and there – one of which claiming the two clubs would meet this week to discuss the Brazilian’s future alongside that of Anthony Martial – but, worryingly, hardly anything from the English press.
There is a real chance we could end up seeing Ashley Young starting at left-back again next season, while the trail on Alderweireld has gone cold amid disagreements over a transfer fee with Tottenham Hotspur.
