Roberto Martinez: Marouane Fellaini is a winner and a warrior

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has explained perfectly just why Jose Mourinho handed Marouane Fellaini a contract extension despite Manchester United fans confusion.

The midfielder was widely expected to leave at the end of his contract that was set to expire earlier this summer but renewed within just days of it running out.

Martinez though was full of praise for Fellaini following his performances in the World Cup, claiming he is a winner and a warrior.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and now Mourinho all rate or rated the Belgian despite some supporters inability to comprehend why he was even at the club.

Now Marouane has plenty more time to actually win over the whole of Old Trafford rather than just some sections as he’s already managed.

According to Manchester Evening News, Roberto said: “Quite simply Marouane Fellaini is a team player, a footballer who shares the best possible mentality for the team. He’s a winner and a warrior.

“Every action matters to him. Nowadays you see a lot of inconsistency from players but Marouane doesn’t understand that. For him, every action is as if it’s the last of the game – he wants to win and puts in the whole effort.

“His size makes him awkward for opponents but he has good technical ability. Technically he is stronger than people think from the outside. But when you work with him closely you see he has important qualities.”

Despite some fans’ uproar at Fellaini’s contract extension, the truth is he will only be used sparingly by Jose in the upcoming Premier League season.

The Portuguese manager did sign Fred this summer and it can only be assumed he will line up alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in a midfield three.

Should the Brazilian, for some bizarre reason, be considered a rotational player then that will push Marouane even further down the pecking order.
