Anthony Martial was all smiles as he returned to Carrington for pre-season training amid speculation over his Manchester United future.
The forward’s agent Philipe Lamboley confirmed last month that his client, following five months on the periphery under Jose Mourinho, wanted to leave the club this summer.
That remains a possibility but Martial has not been seriously linked with any other club, and the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus has severely diminished the possibility of him moving to Turin this summer like many expected.
Questions will nonetheless continue to loom over his future but the sight of him returning to Carrington, and looking in good spirits, will be a welcome sight to supporters.
You can only hope that the quotes from Lamboley last month, which declared in no uncertain terms that Martial was unhappy at Old Trafford, were just posturing. The club does not want to sell a player valued so highly by supporters and Mourinho, even through the lens of cold cynicism through which he sees the world, must recognise how good he is.
And with Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford both set to miss most of pre-season, Martial has a golden chance to show his boss what he can offer at No.9.
