Wayne Rooney: England players are making us all so proud

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has praised the England players for making the whole nation proud of their performances at the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate has led his young side to the semi-finals of the competition with only a win against Croatia separating them from the final.

The Three Lions have gone well beyond any initial expectations with many fans initially happy to just see a few of their players become blooded internationals.

However, a relatively easy route to the final opened up for them following their defeat to Belgium in the group-stages and Southgate’s taken advantage of it.

Whereas Roberto Martinez faced Japan, Brazil and then lost to France, England faced Colombia, Sweden and will play, as aforementioned, Croatia next.

According to Manchester Evening News, Wayne said: “They are doing fantastic. Hopefully we can get the win. It’s great. You see the atmosphere back home.

“Hopefully we can get through and go on to the final. For the players and Gareth, I wish them massive good luck. They are making us all proud.

“Hopefully they can get that one step further and get to the final and bring the cup home. I’ve enjoyed all the buzz coming out of this. We’re enjoying it and we believe.”

Rooney unfortunately never got the opportunity to reach so far in an international competition with England before but there’s no doubt he’s enjoying this just as much.

Many have praised Gareth’s ability to handle the English media which typically tends to create a negative atmosphere while he has managed to do the opposite.

The players have consistently spoken about the relaxed atmosphere within the camp and there’s no doubt it’s played a huge role in their performances so far.
