From Holland: Daley Blind on the verge of completing Ajax move

by Leo Nieboer

Daley Blind has told Manchester United teammates and staff that he will rejoin boyhood club Ajax this week, according to reports from Holland.

The Dutchman moved to Old Trafford four years ago and has made 141 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He only managed a handful of starts last season – just three since November – and didn’t travel with the squad to the United States for their pre-season tour with Ajax working hard on completing a deal.

And according to Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf‘s Mike Verweij, Blind told teammates and staff he was leaving for Amsterdam and has reported to their training camp in England this week.

Blind will move to Ajax for a fee of £14.1m, which could rise to £18.5m, meaning Man United have recouped the majority of what they paid for him back in 2014 (around £15.5m).

This move was on the cards for some time. The Dutchman has served as a competent utility player for United over four years, performing well in defensive midfield as well as central defence and left-back.

His attitude was always admirable: relentlessly dedicated, humble, composed on and off the pitch, a useful if unremarkable member of the squad. He will take on a much bigger role at Ajax.
