Official: Manchester United confirm Daley Blind has joined Ajax

Manchester United have confirmed that Daley Blind has rejoined Ajax after four years at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman’s appearances in the first team were practically non-existent last season and a move away has been on the cards for some time.

Reports from Holland yesterday confirmed that Blind, following four years at Old Trafford, had told teammates he was rejoining his boyhood club and linked up with Eric tan Hag’s side at their training camp in England.

The club claimed via its social media account late on Monday night that terms with Ajax had been agreed for Blind, who will move back to Amsterdam for an initial fee of £14.1m that could rise to £18.5m, and has now officially announced on Tuesday morning that the move has gone through.

If only every Man United player had Blind’s football brain. The Dutchman has always offered a sense of smoothness, of finesse, of composed, complete, easy-on-the-eye technical understanding. His development through the ranks at Ajax conferred a versatility to his game which seemed like second nature.

Never once has he kicked up a fuss. He has spent lengthy periods on the bench. He has played in three different positions and in a variety of different systems. Very rarely did he look uncomfortable or out of his depth.

His lack of speed or strength, however, is clearly at odds with what Mourinho wants from his team next season. He will return to familiar surroundings and an environment which will, no doubt, prove much more hospitable to his fluid, caressed playing style.
