Manchester United 1-1 Club America: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

Lee Grant 7 – Endeared himself to supporters with an impressive first 45 minutes. Looked strong in the air and produced an excellent double save to keep the scores level.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Produced a couple of piercing, energetic runs down the right hand side but his defensive positioning – as to be expected, really – was rusty.

Eric Bailly 6 – Club America’s superior fitness meant Manchester United’s defence was overwhelmed by their pace but his strength kept the Mexican side at bay in the first half. Started to wane after half time and was absolutely nowhere for the cross which led to their second half goal.

Chris Smalling 5 – Looked decidedly rusty, handling the ball gingerly and scrambling for tackles. Lacked presence for Club America’s goal.

Luke Shaw 7 – Reports have suggested that Shaw has topped fitness tests this week and his performance attested to this notion: driven, precise, played at a higher frequency than his teammates.

Scott McTominay 6 – Imposed himself physically in the middle, making his presence felt with some useful interceptions, but often found himself outpaced.

Ander Herrera 5 – Never really got going. Battled well enough in the first half but his passing was well off the mark and fitness nowhere near that of Club America’s midfield.

Andreas Pereira 6 – Performed well on the whole in an unfamiliar position. Looked confident on the ball in the No.6 role and, although decision making could improve, his attitude would have impressed Jose Mourinho.

Demetri Mitchell 6 – Begun the game very brightly, looking nimble and enterprising on the left hand side, only to fade as the half went on.

Juan Mata 7 – A typically tidy, accomplished performance from the Spaniard. Kept himself involved in the flow of United’s play throughout and slammed home the equaliser.

Anthony Martial 6 – Led the line brightly in the first half, linking up nicely with Shaw and Mitchell out wide, and demonstrated strength holding the ball up. Often lacked options around him, however, and didn’t look the same after half time.

Joel Pereira 6 – Did well to stop a one-on-one soon after coming on but could do little about a bullet header which put Club America ahead.

Tahith Chong 7 – A dazzling cameo: burst forward with intent and precision whenever handed the chance and supplied a sumptuous cross for Man United’s equaliser. Supporters will want to see more of him.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah 6 – Came on at half time and started shakily but eventually composed himself in possession.
