Luciano Spalletti confident Ivan Perisic will remain at Inter Milan this summer

Inter Milan boss Luciano Spalletti is confident Ivan Perisic will remain at the San Siro amid rumours of Manchester United reigniting interest in the winger.

Jose Mourinho launched an unsuccessful bid to sign Perisic last summer and recently admitted he didn’t know why the Croat didn’t join the club following his superb display against England in the World Cup semi-final.

Reports emerged soon after suggesting Mourinho, who remains without a clear option on the right hand side, had reestablished interest in signing the winger.

But Spalletti revealed recently that Perisic had shown no sign of wanting to leave the club when the two spoke soon after the World Cup.

“In the last few days I talked to Perisic who finished the celebrations, he told me he is mentally tired and in terms of energy,” he said.

“He must recover but he has not told me anything that concerns his desire to stay here in Milan.”

Mourinho opted for an attacking dynamic last season which relied on the strength of Romelu Lukaku at its masthead with Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez interchanging and darting up the pitch, playing the ball through the centre.

Perisic, in this sense, would serve as a crucial alternative dimension. The way he worked with Mario Mandzukic over the World Cup was a nod to how Mourinho envisaged him playing alongside Lukaku, serving as another physical presence angling in from out wide to open up space for the Belgian.

He ticks plenty of boxes for Mourinho: crossing, presence in the box, first rate work ethic, experience, a thunderous shot. Sadly, though, that ship has sailed.
