Jose Mourinho gives more youth stars a chance against San Jose Earthquakes

Jose Mourinho has handed starts to James Garner and Tahith Chong in Manchester United’s second pre-season match against San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara, California tonight.

Man United face the Earthquakes, bottom of their MLS division, at the Levi’s Stadium as preparations for the 2018-19 campaign continue – opposition that will be fit considering they’re midway through their season.

A 1-1 draw against Club America at the University of Phoenix Stadium in the early hours of Friday morning kicked off the pre-season tour of the USA, as Man of the Match Juan Mata netted late on against another fit outfit.

Garner, who acted as captain for the England U17s side at the European Championships in Yorkshire and The Midlands earlier this, starts in a midfield three alongside Ander Herrera and Andreas Pereira.

The 17-year-old, compared to club great Michael Carrick, is joined by 18-year-old Dutchman Tahith Chong who impressed against Club America.

He starts on the right wing, with Alexis Sanchez on the left and Anthony Martial up front.

Mourinho has started the back four he admitted a few days ago would ‘probably’ start the season as his first-choice defensive options; Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw.

Joel Pereira, who will go out on loan in the coming weeks to gain vital first team experience, will play the first-half in between the sticks and Lee Grant, who also impressed on his debut, should come on at half-time.

Starting XI: Joel Pereira; Antonio Valencia (c), Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw; Andreas Pereira, Ander Herrera, James Garner; Tahith Chong, Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial.
