Fitness coach Stefano Rapetti joined Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at Manchester United this summer as part of an overhaul ahead of a decisive third season at helm.
Mourinho’s long-term number two Rui Faria left the Portuguese’s side at the end of the 2017-18 campaign to pursue his dream of becoming a manager himself.
That sparked the arrival of three new key coaching changes at Man United as U18s head coach Kieran McKenna, retired midfielder Michael Carrick and former Sampdoria coach Stefano Rapetti stepped up to the plate.
Rapetti spent glory years at Inter Milan alongside Mourinho, in which they won the treble of the Serie A, Coppa Italia and unbelievably the Champions League, but they are now back together at Old Trafford.
MUTV sat down with Rapetti during United’ pre-season preparations in the USA and here are the highlights of the exclusive interview.
Can you tell us about your new role at the club?
“I am a fitness coach and now the head of fitness coaching for Manchester United. I am here because I worked with the manager, Jose Mourinho, at Inter Milan.”
You must have fond memories of that time in Italy with Jose?
“It was a very successful time and an amazing experience at Inter. We won all of the competitions, all of the tournaments, and I am very happy to be with him again at Manchester United.”
How are you getting along with your fellow coaches here at United?
“The new colleagues are fantastic. When I arrived they were very friendly with me right away and I think now we are already working well together.”
This is the first time working outside of Italy – you must be excited?
“Yes it is a fantastic experience for me. It is the first time I have worked out of Italy and I am sure that it will be a good experience.”
Only time will tell with the changes in the coaching staff with reap rewards for Mourinho and United in the upcoming season but it certainly is fascinating to see how the new faces get on.
