Jose Mourinho hints at key role for Ashley Young at Manchester United this season

Jose Mourinho has laid down his biggest hint yet that Ashley Young will once again play a vital role in his plans throughout the 2018-19 season.

Young is currently absent from Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the USA after helping England reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals in Russia this summer.

He’s expected to link up with the rest of the squad after his holiday is over at the start of March but his manager is already desperate for him to return.

After Man United drew their second tour match 0-0 against San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara on Sunday night, Mourinho explained to MUTV his eagerness for the 33-year-old to end his well-earned rest and praised his contribution to a magnificent World Cup run.

“The whole world saw just how good Ashley Young is at the World Cup. He was probably the best left back in the tournament. He’s a key player for me here and I can’t wait for him to finish his rest and be back with us. We need him!”

Young had his best individual season ever at United last term and featured in 39 games overall, 30 of which came in the Premier League, registering two goals and seven assists.

It was the most matches he’s played since the 2010-11 campaign at Aston Villa and it’s very likely he’ll have a similar impact this term too.
