Jose Mourinho has confirmed Nemanja Matic will not be ready in time to feature against AC Milan on Wednesday night.

The 55-year-old voiced hopes over the World Cup that Serbia would be eliminated at the group stages in order to give Matic, who played 49 times last season, a proper rest.

He arrived in Los Angeles over the weekend after three weeks of rest and will train with the entire squad for the first time on Tuesday.

Speaking to MUTV ahead of Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, Mourinho stressed that Matic needed some more time on the training ground before taking part in any pre-season games.

“Matic trained today for the first time,” he said.

“[He did] individual training, he’s not going to play in the third game after today’s though.”

Matic arrived at the same time as Sanchez but Mourinho is clearly keen to ease the midfielder back into proceedings after starting the majority of games last season before competing in the World Cup.

New signing Fred, on the other hand, will be thrown in at the first possible chance, you suspect, given Paul Pogba’s absence from the squad. Supporters will be keen to see how he plays alongside Andreas Pereira, who has impressed in United’s opening pair of matches in the United States.
