Dimitar Berbatov has tipped Manchester United to win the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho next season.
Man United achieved their best league finish and points total last season, finishing second with 81 points, but nonetheless found themselves 19 points behind Manchester City.
Their fallow transfer window, during which Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk has been the only ‘major’ signing, coupled with Mourinho’s foul mood over pre-season has led to most writing them off for the title next season.
But Berbatov, speaking in an interview earlier this week, was convinced that this would be the season where United emerged triumphant in May.
“The top four will be the same as last season but in this order – Manchester United, Spurs, Manchester City, and Liverpool,” he said.
All signs point towards United not winning the title, and possibly even missing out on the top four. United are the longest odds they’ve been for the title in over 20 years and the signs of a Mourinho third season collapse are too glaring to ignore.
The lack of improvements made to the squad – namely at left-back, central defence, and in attack – are a cause for concern with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all improving their squads over the summer.
But the biggest stumbling block feels like the manager, whose defeatist attitude and historical inability to grow, coach and nurture teams has left supporters fearing for the next nine months.
