Jose Mourinho has cleared the air about Anthony Martial leaving Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States earlier this week.
Tension has been high between Mourinho and Martial since the Man United boss chose to sign Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez in the January transfer window whilst the young Frenchman was enjoying a fine season as first-choice left winger.
Supporters feared the worst when it emerged that the 22-year-old had left the squad, but it was later revealed that he had flown to Paris on Wednesday to be with his pregnant partner Melanie da Cruz.
Da Cruz is expecting the birth of their first child, and Mourinho has now confirmed that he gave Martial permission to halt his pre-season preparations.
“I found out that Martial was going to Paris when he told me,” Mourinho said after United’s penalty shoot-out victory against AC Milan in Los Angeles. “It was two or three days ago.
“When it is personal reasons, everyone analyses that the way they think is the correct way and when a man is going to be a father in this case, it’s the second time he is going to be a father, and he decides is very important for him to go, nobody has the right to stop him to go.”
Mourinho is open to selling Martial, who wants to depart Old Trafford, in order to free up funds for an all-out right winger with Chelsea and Bayern Munich his biggest suitors.
It’s unknown whether the no. 11 will return to the USA.
